"The final minutes of qualifying delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the season"

George Russell secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring. The Mercedes driver set the fastest lap of 1:06.113, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc (1:06.349) and Lewis Hamilton (1:06.376).

The biggest moment came in the final minutes of Q3 when Max Verstappen crashed at Turn 9 while pushing for a faster lap. The accident brought out yellow flags and ended his chance of challenging for pole.

Russell's lap was briefly questioned because he passed the yellow-flag zone, but FIA officials confirmed he had slowed enough to comply with the regulations. As a result, his lap stood, and he officially claimed pole position.

Despite the crash, Verstappen's earlier lap of 1:06.451 was good enough for fifth on the grid. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli impressed by qualifying fourth, making it a strong day for the Silver Arrows.

The result gives Russell an excellent opportunity to fight for victory on race day, with Ferrari and Red Bull expected to provide strong competition in Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix.
