"A composed drive under pressure helped Russell cut into the championship lead"

George Russell secured victory at the Austrian Grand Prix after converting pole position into a brilliant win for Mercedes. The British driver led from the start and held off strong pressure from Max Verstappen to claim his second victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Russell crossed the finish line 1.611 seconds ahead of Verstappen, despite dealing with a failed drinks system during the race. Mercedes celebrated a double podium as championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished third after recovering from early mistakes.

Lando Norris took fourth place for McLaren, while Lewis Hamilton finished fifth for Ferrari after an entertaining battle with Verstappen in the opening laps. Charles Leclerc, who started on the front row, slipped to eighth by the checkered flag.

The victory reduced Antonelli's lead in the Drivers' Championship to 40 points and strengthened Mercedes' position at the top of the Constructors' standings. Russell's seventh career Formula 1 win also continued Mercedes' impressive run, with the team now claiming seven victories from the first eight races of the season.

The result gives Russell fresh momentum heading into the next round as the battle for both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships continues to intensify.
