"He managed the lead with composure, leaving competitors struggling to catch up"

Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, marking a sensational performance for the 19-year-old Mercedes driver. Starting from pole position, he briefly dropped to sixth early in the race but staged a strong comeback, eventually finishing 13.7 seconds ahead of Oscar Piastri of McLaren. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari claimed third place on the podium.

With this victory, Antonelli became the youngest driver ever to lead the Formula One World Championship, at just 19 years and 216 days old. He now holds a nine-point lead over his teammate George Russell in the drivers’ standings. A mid-race safety car also played a role in reshaping race strategies, but Antonelli’s pace and composure ensured he stayed in control.

This win is Antonelli’s second consecutive Formula One victory, following his earlier triumph in China, and highlights his rapid rise in the sport. Mercedes has made a strong start to the season, and Antonelli’s performance puts him in a commanding position as the championship progresses.

Formula One now heads into a brief break before the Miami Grand Prix on May 3, 2026, with Antonelli aiming to maintain his championship lead in the upcoming races.
