ICC Confirms Replacement for Matheesha Pathirana

"The team’s quick adjustment shows the importance of having experienced backups ready"

Sri Lanka’s fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. He suffered a muscle strain in his left leg during the team’s recent match against Australia. The injury forced him to leave the field, and scans confirmed he would not be fit for the remaining matches. This is a major setback, as Pathirana has been one of Sri Lanka’s key strike bowlers.

To replace him, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Event Technical Committee approved left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka. Madushanka has prior international experience in T20s and other formats. His inclusion is expected to strengthen Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.

Sri Lanka will rely on Madushanka in upcoming matches, including their final group-stage game against Zimbabwe and the Super 8 fixtures. The team management believes he will provide depth and more options in the pace department.

Despite Pathirana’s absence, Sri Lanka aims to remain competitive and maintain momentum. The team hopes to continue their strong performance and make an impact in the Super 8 stage.
