Mexico beat South Korea 1–0 in a tense World Cup group match at Estadio Guadalajara. The win also made Mexico the first team to qualify for the knockout stage.
Luis Romo scored the only goal in the 50th minute. He tapped the ball into an empty net after a mistake by goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.
South Korea pushed for an equaliser late in the game. Cho Gue-sung had a strong header saved by Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel. Rangel also stopped the rebound with a quick reaction.
Mexico stayed compact and controlled key moments under pressure. They defended well and kept their lead until full time. Coach Javier Aguirre’s side continues a strong tournament start.
With this result, Mexico move into the knockout stage. South Korea still have a chance to qualify from the group and will aim to recover in their next matches
