“A historic expansion designed to give more runners a chance to be part of the iconic event”
The London Marathon will run over two days in 2027 as a special one-off edition. Organisers expanded the event after a record number of applications.
The race will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Around 100,000 runners will take part across both days. This change aims to give more people a chance through the ballot and increase participation in the event.
Organisers said the expansion could raise over £150 million for charities. It could also bring a strong economic boost to the UK. They called it a historic and ambitious version of the marathon.
The ballot will include entries for both days. Results will be announced in July. All runners will complete the traditional route from Greenwich to Westminster.
Officials will split elite athletes and mass participants across the two days. Final race details will come later. The event will return to its normal one-day format after 2027.
