“Germany scored first, but Ecuador fought back with an inspired display.”
Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by coming from behind to beat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the Round of 32.
Germany made the perfect start when Leroy SanĂ© scored in the second minute. Ecuador responded quickly as Nilson Angulo equalized just seven minutes later with the country’s first goal of the tournament after 39 previous attempts without success.
The winning moment came in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata finished from close range following a corner, sparking huge celebrations among Ecuador’s players and supporters.
Ecuador stayed composed under late German pressure and held on for a famous victory. The result earned them a place in the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
It also marked Ecuador’s first World Cup knockout appearance since 2006. Germany, despite the defeat, still finished top of Group E on goal difference and also advanced to the Round of 32.
