“History continues to be written as Eala inspires a new generation of tennis players”
Alex Eala claimed the biggest victory of her career by defeating defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2. The win sent the 21-year-old Filipina into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time.
Eala played with confidence from the opening point. She matched Swiatek in a tightly contested first set and stayed calm during a dramatic tiebreak. She saved two set points before sealing the set and taking control of the match.
The Filipina continued her aggressive play in the second set. She struck powerful winners and forced Swiatek into costly mistakes. Eala wrapped up the match in straight sets with an outstanding performance.
The victory made Eala the first Filipino player to reach the second week of a Grand Slam tournament. It also marked another historic milestone in her rapidly growing career and became one of the biggest upsets of this year’s Wimbledon.
Eala will face Jasmine Paolini in the next round. She will aim to extend her dream run at the All England Club.
