“A stunning late goal sent Canada one step closer to World Cup glory”
Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles. Stephen Eustáquio scored the winning goal deep into stoppage time to send Canada into the knockout stage.
The match remained goalless for most of the game despite Canada creating several good chances. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made a series of important saves to keep South Africa in the contest, while Maxime Crépeau also denied the opposition at the other end.
Canada finally found the breakthrough in the 92nd minute when Eustáquio controlled a clearance before firing a superb long-range strike into the bottom corner. The victory marked Canada’s first-ever World Cup knockout-stage win and secured a place in the Round of 16.
Captain Alphonso Davies made his return from injury as a second-half substitute, adding fresh energy to the attack. Canada will now face the winner of the Netherlands and Morocco in the next round.
