“A dramatic end to a tournament that will be remembered for more than just football”
Morocco has won the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the final result against Senegal. CAF awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory. Senegal had originally won 1–0 after extra time.
The final took place at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The match sparked controversy when Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a late penalty for Morocco. Although Senegal returned and won on the field, CAF ruled that the walkout violated tournament rules and counted it as a forfeit.
This decision gives Morocco their second AFCON title, the first being in 1976. It also prevents Senegal from defending their 2021 crown. The ruling caused debate across African football. Senegal’s Football Federation called it “unfair and unprecedented” and said it would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
CAF’s ruling highlights the need to follow tournament rules. Morocco celebrated the title on home soil, ending a dramatic and controversial tournament.
