“The race highlighted the impact of the new F1 technical regulations, with Mercedes adapting perfectly”

George Russell won the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, the first race of the new Formula 1 season. The race was held at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, with Mercedes taking a 1‑2 finish as Kimi Antonelli came second.

Russell fought with Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in the opening laps before gaining the lead through a smart pit strategy during a Virtual Safety Car period. He finished about 2.9 seconds ahead of Antonelli. Leclerc came third, and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth.

Drama struck before the race when local favorite Oscar Piastri crashed on the way to the grid and could not start. Max Verstappen recovered from a poor qualifying to finish sixth.

This was Russell’s first Australian GP win and his sixth Formula 1 victory. Mercedes takes an early lead in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships under the new rules.

Russell praised his team for strategy and car performance, calling the win a big boost for his title hopes. Fans are excited for a thrilling new era in Formula 1.
