“Big players delivered in a match that demanded composure and class”
Sri Lanka produced a stunning performance to defeat Australia by eight wickets and secure their place in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match was played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on February 16.
Australia batted first and posted 181 runs in their 20 overs. Travis Head gave them a flying start with 56 runs off 29 balls, while Mitchell Marsh added 54 from 27 deliveries. The pair dominated the powerplay, but Sri Lanka’s bowlers fought back strongly. Dushan Hemantha picked up three important wickets, and Dushmantha Chameera claimed two to slow down the scoring in the later overs.
Chasing 182 for victory, Sri Lanka looked confident from the beginning. Pathum Nissanka delivered a remarkable innings, scoring an unbeaten 100 off just 52 balls. His knock included 10 fours and five sixes, and it was the first century of the 2026 tournament. Kusal Mendis supported him well with 51 runs, building a solid partnership that put Australia under pressure.
Sri Lanka reached 184 for 2 in just 18 overs, finishing the game with 12 balls to spare. The comfortable win marked their third straight victory in Group B and confirmed their qualification for the Super 8 stage.
The result leaves Australia in a difficult position, as their hopes of advancing now depend on other match outcomes. For Sri Lanka, however, the dominant display sends a strong message to the rest of the tournament.
