Van der Poel Powers to Victory in Shortened Tour de France Stage

Mathieu van der Poel claimed victory in Stage 9 of the 2026 Tour de France after a thrilling finish on a heat-shortened course. The stage was reduced from 185.5 km to 154.6 km because of temperatures nearing 40°C. The Dutch rider completed the race in 3:27:51 to earn an impressive victory.

Van der Poel launched his decisive move on the final climb, Mont Bessou, with Tobias Halland Johannessen, Tom Pidcock, and Alex Baudin. The four riders stayed just ahead of the chasing peloton before Van der Poel produced the strongest sprint to take the win.

Johannessen finished second, while Pidcock claimed third place despite suffering a late mechanical issue. The chasing group, led by overall leader Tadej Pogačar, crossed the line just six seconds later.

The victory was Van der Poel's third Tour de France stage win and his first of the 2026 race. Pogačar successfully retained the yellow jersey, while the demanding stage once again highlighted the challenges riders faced in the extreme summer heat
