"Teamwork and determination were key in Britain’s impressive sprint performances on the opening day."

Matthew Richardson claimed a silver medal for Great Britain in the team sprint at the 2025 UCI Track World Championships in Santiago, Chile. It marked his first medal since switching allegiance from Australia, where he had previously been a world champion.

Riding with Joe Truman and Hamish Turnbull, the British trio showed impressive speed and teamwork, narrowly missing gold by just 0.37 seconds to the Netherlands. The Dutch team, led by Harrie Lavreysen, secured their seventh team sprint world title in eight years.

Richardson said the result felt bittersweet — proud to win a medal in a Great Britain skinsuit for the first time but disappointed not to reach the top of the podium. He added that the performance shows the team is closing the gap on the dominant Dutch squad.

The opening day also brought success for the women’s team sprint, who earned silver, while Maddie Leech finished sixth in the women’s scratch race. The British pursuit teams also posted strong qualifying times, setting up a promising start for Great Britain at the world championships.
