Iran Set to Skip 2026 FIFA World Cup After Government Decision

Iran may miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the country’s sports minister said the team cannot participate under the current conditions.

Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said the Iran national football team is unlikely to take part because of political and security tensions. Officials worry it may not be safe for the team to travel and compete abroad.

The 2026 World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Several matches will be played in the United States, which adds to the authorities’ concerns.

Iran already qualified through the Asian qualifiers, but the situation now casts doubt on their participation. FIFA has not confirmed the team’s withdrawal and continues to monitor events.

If Iran withdraws, FIFA may select another Asian team as a replacement. Iraq or the United Arab Emirates could fill the vacant spot.
