FIFA mulls expanding 2030 World Cup to 64 teams

FIFA is considering expanding the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams to celebrate the tournament’s 100th anniversary. Uruguay’s Football Association first proposed the idea. Leaders from Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina later discussed it with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The new format would increase the number of matches to 128, making the tournament the largest ever. Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will jointly host the 2030 World Cup. Opening matches will take place in South America to honor the inaugural 1930 tournament.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez supports the expansion and highlights the significance of a larger event for the centennial celebration. However, FIFA officials and football federations from Europe and Asia, including UEFA and the AFC, have raised concerns. Critics warn that a 64-team format could lead to uncompetitive matches and affect the tournament’s business model.

FIFA will discuss the proposal further at upcoming Council meetings in Zurich. Organizers still have several years to finalize the plan before the 2030 World Cup.
