"Tennis tournaments can change dramatically due to sudden withdrawals."
Novak Djokovic has reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 Australian Open after his fourth-round opponent, Jakub Mensik, withdrew due to injury. Mensik, from the Czech Republic, suffered an abdominal muscle problem that worsened over recent matches. He had to forfeit the match just a day before it was scheduled.
Djokovic moves forward without playing and secures a spot in the last eight. This marks his 16th quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open. He continues his pursuit of a record 11th title at Melbourne Park and his 25th Grand Slam overall.
Mensik said he felt disappointed about withdrawing. He added that reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time was a proud milestone. Despite the setback, he remains positive about his future in tennis.
Djokovic will face either Lorenzo Musetti or Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. He has not dropped a set so far in the tournament. He aims to maintain his strong form and win another historic title in Melbourne.
