“West Indies’ strong total was not enough to stop India’s determined response”
India moved into the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after a thrilling five-wicket win over West Indies in the Super 8 stage at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
West Indies batted first and posted a strong total of 195 for 4 in their 20 overs. Roston Chase scored 40 runs, while Jason Holder added 37 and Rovman Powell contributed 34. Their powerful hitting in the final overs helped them reach a competitive score.
In reply, India chased down the target by scoring 199 for 5 in 19.2 overs, winning with four balls to spare. After losing a couple of early wickets, India rebuilt the innings carefully.
Sanju Samson was the hero of the match. He played an outstanding unbeaten knock of 97 runs from just 50 balls, hitting 12 fours and 4 sixes. His calm and aggressive batting kept India in control during the chase. Tilak Varma chipped in with 27 runs, and Hardik Pandya also made a useful contribution in the final overs.
Samson finished the match in style by hitting a six and a four in the final over. His 97 not out is one of the highest scores by an Indian in a T20 World Cup chase.
With this important victory, India secured their place in the semi-finals, where they will face England in Mumbai.
