“The crash didn’t stop the mission — it only made the victory more meaningful.”

Australian cyclist Jay Vine won the 2026 Tour Down Under, despite a dramatic crash involving a kangaroo on the final stage.

During the last stage in the Adelaide Hills, two kangaroos jumped into the peloton. Vine collided with one, fell, and quickly changed bikes before rejoining the group. He stayed focused and continued racing despite the chaos.

Vine had built a strong lead earlier in the week and protected it to the finish. He completed the tour in 16 hours 44 minutes 54 seconds. He held a 1 minute 3 second advantage over Switzerland’s Mauro Schmid, who finished second. Australian Harry Sweeny took third place.

British rider Matthew Brennan won the final stage with a late sprint, despite the disruption caused by the kangaroos.

This victory adds another major achievement to Vine’s career. It highlights his resilience and determination. The 2026 Tour Down Under will be remembered not only for the racing but also for one of the sport’s most unusual and talked-about moments.
