“Verstappen’s dominant performance reminded the grid that the title fight is far from over.”
Max Verstappen delivered a flawless performance to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. Starting from pole, the Red Bull driver controlled the race from lights to flag and also set the fastest lap, completing a dominant weekend.
Championship leader Oscar Piastri’s race ended almost instantly when he locked up at Turn 5 on the opening lap and crashed into the barriers. It was a costly mistake that left him with no points and allowed his rivals to cut into his lead.
George Russell produced a strong drive to finish second for Mercedes despite feeling unwell, while Carlos Sainz gave Williams a memorable podium in third place. Behind them, Kimi Antonelli impressed with fourth, and Liam Lawson achieved a career-best fifth.
Lando Norris only managed seventh after pit stop problems, but still reduced Piastri’s advantage in the championship to 25 points. Verstappen also closed the gap, putting himself back in the title hunt.
The result means McLaren will have to wait to secure the Constructors’ Championship, with their next opportunity coming at the Singapore Grand Prix.
