The Sri Lankan Masters Athletics Team is heading to Chennai, India, to compete in the 23rd Asian Masters Athletics Championships. Over 3,300 athletes from 22 countries will take part in the event, making it one of the largest masters-level competitions in Asia.

Sri Lanka’s contingent includes 225 members, with 129 male athletes and 96 female athletes. They will compete across 11 age categories, ranging from 35 to 90 years old. Among them, Somapala Gammanpila, aged 70, will represent the country in his category, bringing experience and skill to the team.

The athletes will take part in a wide range of track and field events, including sprints, middle- and long-distance races, jumps, and throws. The team aims to achieve strong performances and bring home honours for Sri Lanka.

This competition not only showcases the talents of experienced athletes but also promotes lifelong fitness and sportsmanship. It provides an opportunity for athletes beyond the usual open-age categories to compete on an international stage and gain valuable experience.
