The Southern Hemisphere’s Rugby Championship will not take place in 2026, SANZAAR announced. The decision comes after major scheduling changes and the launch of the new Nations Championship.

The Rugby Championship usually features South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina. It will take a one-year break to make room for other international fixtures. One reason is the planned All Blacks tour of South Africa, which conflicts with the usual tournament window.

In 2026, teams will compete in the Nations Championship, held in July and November. They will also play special tours in August and September.

The Rugby Championship will return in 2027, ahead of the Rugby World Cup. It will continue through 2028 and 2029, then pause again in 2030.

Officials say the break will help balance a busy global calendar. It will also protect player welfare and maintain top rivalries.
