“It was a performance built on teamwork, timing, and smart decision-making rather than brute power”
Sri Lanka began their tournament with a hard-fought 20-run victory over Ireland in the opening match. The team showed strong character with both bat and ball.
Sri Lanka batted first and scored 163 for 6 in 20 overs after losing early wickets. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with a calm 56 not out and held one end together. Late in the innings, Kamindu Mendis shifted the momentum with a blazing 44 off 19 balls. Pathum Nissanka also added a useful 24 at the top.
Ireland started the chase well but lost control once the spinners took charge. Ross Adair (34) and Harry Tector (40) tried to keep Ireland in the game. Regular wickets, however, slowed the scoring rate. Sri Lanka bowled Ireland out for 143 in 19.5 overs.
The bowlers delivered a disciplined performance. Maheesh Theekshana took 3 for 23, and Wanindu Hasaranga claimed 3 for 25. They broke key partnerships in the middle overs and built constant pressure.
It was a complete team effort from Sri Lanka. Solid batting, sharp bowling, and strong intent gave them a confident and valuable opening win in the campaign.
