“High heat and humidity have forced Formula 1 to introduce new safety measures for the first time.”

The FIA has declared the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix as Formula 1’s first-ever “Heat Hazard” race. The rule activates when the heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, rises above 31°C.

Drivers can wear cooling vests to manage the extreme heat. Those who decide against it must carry extra ballast to keep the race fair. Every team also has to fit the required cooling hardware to their cars.

The FIA introduced this step after several drivers suffered exhaustion in hot races, most notably at the 2023 Qatar GP. In Singapore, conditions could feel close to 50°C inside the cockpit, making it one of the toughest challenges of the season.

Some drivers believe the cooling vests may not last a full race or cause discomfort under heavy G-forces. Others welcome the system as a valuable safety measure for extreme climates.
