“A new era begins for Pakistan cricket as Shaheen Afridi steps forward to lead with passion and determination.”
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new captain of Pakistan’s One Day International (ODI) team, replacing Mohammad Rizwan.
The decision came after a meeting in Islamabad with head coach Mike Hesson, director Aqib Javed, and the national selection committee. Afridi’s first assignment as captain will be the three-match ODI series against South Africa in Faisalabad this November.
At 25, Afridi is already one of Pakistan’s leading fast bowlers, having taken more than 130 wickets in 66 ODIs. He briefly captained the T20 side in 2024, showing flashes of leadership despite mixed results.
The PCB believes Afridi’s appointment will bring fresh energy, discipline, and long-term stability to Pakistan’s white-ball cricket. With his passion, experience, and strong on-field presence, Afridi aims to lead Pakistan toward renewed confidence and consistent performances on the international stage.
