“The Prague championship was a perfect farewell for her legendary career”
Japanese figure skating star Kaori Sakamoto ended her competitive career in style by winning her fourth World Championship gold at the 2026 World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
Sakamoto performed a flawless free skate to “Non, je ne regrette rien” and earned a career-best segment score. Combined with her short program, she totaled 238.28 points, finishing well ahead of her rivals. She became the first woman since Michelle Kwan to win four world titles in ladies’ singles skating.
Mone Chiba of Japan won the silver medal, while Belgium’s Nina Pinzarrone claimed bronze.
Throughout her career, Sakamoto won multiple Olympic medals, Grand Prix titles, and national championships. She established herself as one of Japan’s most decorated figure skaters. Her dedication, resilience, and artistry inspired a new generation of skaters.
Now retired from competition, Sakamoto plans to coach and mentor young skaters. She will continue to influence the sport she helped popularize in Japan.
