“Not just qualifying — Rumesh Tharanga is redefining what’s possible for Sri Lankan athletics.”

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga has qualified for the men’s javelin final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Tharanga recorded a best throw of 82.80 metres in the qualification round. Although he fell short of the automatic qualifying distance of 84.50 metres, his performance was strong enough to secure a place among the top 12 athletes moving forward to the final.

The 22-year-old has been in excellent form this season, recently setting a new Sri Lankan record with a throw of 86.50 metres in Bhubaneswar, India. His steady improvement has made him one of the country’s brightest hopes on the international stage.

With this achievement, Tharanga has brought pride to Sri Lanka’s athletics community. All eyes will now be on him as he prepares to challenge some of the world’s best javelin throwers in the final, which will take place later this week in Tokyo.
