“The tournament develops local talent and prepares teams for major competitions like the Clifford Cup.”

The Sri Lanka Rugby Championship, also called the Nippon Paint Inter-Club Rugby League, has officially begun. It is the top national-level rugby union club competition in Sri Lanka and runs from November to February.

Eight Division ‘A’ teams are participating this season, including Kandy SC, CR & FC, Navy SC, Havelock SC, Air Force SC, Army SC, Police SC, and Sri Lions SC. Clubs are now allowed to field one foreign player, which adds extra excitement to the league.

The tournament features a first round of home-and-away matches, followed by a second round and knockout stages, including Plate and Cup matches. Last season, CR & FC won the title, ending a 26-year wait.

The league is crucial for Sri Lankan rugby. It develops local talent, prepares teams for major competitions like the Clifford Cup, and helps identify future stars. Fans are eagerly watching as the tournament kicks off and promises competitive and exciting matches.
