“I compete for everyone who thought their journey was over — it’s never too late to start again.”
Britain’s Funmi Oduwaiye claimed her first major international medal after finishing third in the women’s F64 shot put at the World Para Athletics Championships.
The 27-year-old produced a personal best throw of 12.11 metres, a huge improvement on her previous record, to secure the bronze medal and add to Great Britain’s overall success at the competition.
Oduwaiye only took up para athletics in 2022 after a serious leg injury ended her basketball career. Despite her late start in the sport, she has quickly progressed, making her World Championship debut last year and now stepping onto the podium just twelve months later.
Speaking after the event, Oduwaiye said she was proud to deliver a medal for her country and is determined to keep improving as she looks ahead to future international championships and the Paralympic Games.
