“Michael Gregoritsch’s late header secured Austria’s long-awaited return to the World Cup.”
Austria secured a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after drawing 1–1 with Bosnia & Herzegovina in Vienna. Bosnia took the lead early through Haris Tabaković in the 12th minute. Austria thought they had equalized before halftime, but Konrad Laimer’s goal was disallowed after a VAR review.
The crucial equalizer came in the 77th minute when Michael Gregoritsch headed in a cross from Marcel Sabitzer. This goal ensured Austria finished top of Group H, qualifying directly for the World Cup.
This marks Austria’s first World Cup appearance since 1998, ending a 27-year absence. Coach Ralf Rangnick praised his team’s determination, and veteran forward Marko Arnautović expressed joy at finally reaching the tournament.
Bosnia & Herzegovina now finish second in the group and will compete in the European playoffs in March 2026 for another chance to qualify. Austria joins other European qualifiers including Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, and Scotland for next year’s tournament, which will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
